Because of his Oriental appearance and fluency in Chinese and Malay, the author was asked to volunteer for service behind Japanese lines with the Services Reconnaissance Department, later Z Special Unit. Drawing on notes from his wartime diary, the author relates his experiences over a 9-month period with Z Special Unit and focuses on Operation "Agas 1" where 7 men, including the author, were inserted close to Sandakan by the US Submarine Tuna. Also includes details of other Agas operations, the death marches, and those who escaped from Ranau.
