Diary of an Australian Soldier (1921) By Captain K. J. Barrett

 

Keith Joy Barrett was born in 1891 at South Yarra, Ed. Church of England Grammar School, Melbourne, Univ. of Melbourne, Dookie Agricultural College & Sparrowvale. Enlisted 2nd Field Amb., AIF 1914, reached Alexandria where he was recommended for a commission which he received in the Royal Fusiliers in April 1915. He served at Gallipoli with the 2nd Bn. for six weeks, August-Sept. 1915 then contracted typhoid & was sent to hospital in Malta. Rejoined 2nd RF in France; wounded near Beaumont Hamel on the 30th inst. He joined the 4th Royal Fusiliers in France in Sept. 1916, was mortally wounded near Guemappe on 13th April 1917 & DoW on the 16th. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery. Contains a Preface by his father including recollection of his modest academic attainments ("he passed through his school days without showing any remarkable ability, or indeed any great interest in his work until he began to study physical science he was keenly interested in what is generally known as nature study, & acquired a fairly full knowledge of the wild life of the Australian continent "); a short statement of his services followed by his diary kept throughout his active service 1914-17 in Gallipoli & France. Service at Gallipoli is covered in 15 pages but contains some interesting material. Concludes with extracts from letters of condolence from brother officers etc.
