Large Oil Painting 'Memory' By Kevin Brereton
Kevin William Brereton 1933 - 2008. Australian artist - sculpture, painter, potter - trained at The National Gallery art school Victoria and at Prahran Technical College. He taught at St Arnaud High School and Portland High School in Victoria before making the journey north to the Northern Rivers District of NSW where he taught art at Mullumbimby High School. He and his wife, fibre artist Janet Brereton, established a gallery and studio pottery at New Brighton and were active there in the 1970s. From there he undertook commissioned work and freelance projects, the largest of which is the façade of the library at Rockhampton University Campus.
After leaving New Brighton he qualified as an Architect at the University of Newcastle and later turned his hand to mastering and promoting croquet before returning to his first love of painting. A charismatic and peppery personality his work has found a home in numerous private collections around the world, from official gifts to foreign dignitaries, and purchases by persons of celebrity and art lovers from all walks of life.
As a mature age student, he went on to qualify as an Architect (1984), winning the University Medal. He then largely disappeared from the public arena to support his invalid wife. During this time he became involved in croquet, putting his skills to the manufacture of mallets and producing coaching videos.
He passed away in 2008.
