Stand by To Surface (1944) By Richard Baxter

This account of the actions of submarines of the Allies in WWII focuses mainly on those of the Royal Navy, as the war had some time to run when the manuscript was completed. Thus, while the exploits of the British ships and their officers and men, particulary operations in the Mediterranean and sustaining beleaguered Malta, take pride of place, attention is also accorded the "great deeds" of the Polish, Dutch and Greek subs, as well of the US Navy in the early days of the Pacific War.

The landing of agents on hostile shores, the part played by the smaller subs, surfaced gun actions against ships and shore targets are covered as well as the hunt for enemy warships and merchantmen.

Given the restrictions of war-time censorship it is surprising how much detail is included in this account of the war at sea in Allied subs.
