This is a survey of security issues facing the United States in Asia. Despite some occasional lapses of judgment-e.g., a Sino-Soviet détente will "dramatically" increase the threat to the West-it is generally sober. It is best when focused on Southeast Asia, an area the author knows well. There is a good discussion of security issues in the ASEAN countries, of Australia's role in Asian security, and of the falling out between the United States and New Zealand over Wellington's ban on U.S. nuclear-capable ships.
