Wars Without End (1987) By Eric Downton

This is an extraordinary journey by a Canadian war correspondent working for the British press on several continents. At the age of 20 an idealistic Eric Downton traveled from London to Spain to cover that country's civil war where he first saw death and destruction. A year later he was in Singapore reporting on the approaching war with Japan. In Shanghai, he witnessed the cruelties that heralded that holocaust in Asia. In Europe, he was in France with General Patton's army
preparing to cross the Rhine. In the postwar years, he witnessed the birth of Israel and the fighting in Palestine. He would cover the bloody emergence of independent countries in Africa and the continuing turmoil in the Middle East. At one point he travels over the mountains from Kabul into the heart of Wahirizstan where he interviews a warlord who echoes the same fierce nationalist sentiments that Taliban-like leaders will express fifty-five years later in the face of American military intimidation, bombing and drones.
